La Dutch East India Company fue el vehículo que llevó la Francmasonería a Sudáfrica.

El Gran Oriente de Holanda había sido fundado en 1756. Durante la gran expansión naval holandesa del Siglo XVII muchos capitanes de barco eran Masones. La ciudad de Kaaspstad (ahora más conocida como Ciudad del Cabo o Cape Town) se convirtió en importante base de operaciones de la Dutch East India Co. En 1771, el VஃHஃ Abraham van der Weijde, capitán de un buque mercante que regularmente cubría la ruta entre Holanda y las Indias Orientales, fue nombrado Diputado Gran Maestro para Ultramar, e investido con autoridad para fundar e instalar Logias, que deberían luego ser sometidas a ratificación por la Gran Logia. Van der Weijde convocó a una reunión a los masones holandeses radicados en Cape Town el 24 de abril de 1772, en la que bajo su presidencia se decidió adelantar los trámites ante la Gran Logia de Holanda para crear la primera Logia de Sudáfrica, que se llamaría De Goede Hoop (en holandés, La Buena Esperanza).

Esta nueva Logia fue reconocida por el Gran Oriente Holandés el 1º de septiembre de 1772. La situación social de Cape Town en donde había dos clases de blancos: los oficiales de la Compañía y los llamados “mercaderes libres”, antiguos empleados de la Compañía, a quienes sólo se les permitía adquirir tierras y/o comerciar después de haber dejado sus empleos o contratos con la Compañía. Los nativos estaban excluidos de toda consideración en la cerrada sociedad blanca. La Iglesia condenó tempranamente a la Francmasonería pues ésta “inculcaba el deísmo y practicaba el principio de igualdad entre sus miembros, y sus principios Iluministas constituyen una amenaza para la estratificada sociedad de Cape Town”. El Vஃ Mஃ de la Good Hope escribió al Gran Oriente Holandés en 1774 “que las prédicas desde los púlpitos han hecho indisponer a las mujeres contra sus esposos que pertenecen o desean pertenecer a la Orden”. Estas circunstancias hicieron que la Logia abatiera CColஃ en abril de 1781. En 1794 levantó de nuevo CColஃ, en gran medida debido a que el Vஃ Hஃ Johannes Andries Truter, alto oficial de la Compañía, fue nombrado jefe de Justicia de la ciudad, y la Orden pudo así neutralizar a la Iglesia y ganar la protección de la Compañía. La Logia De Goede Hoope aún existe en Suráfrica.



Luego de las vicisitudes propias de la historia surafricana, que impactaron también a la Orden allí, hoy la Gran Logia de Sudáfrica, fundada el 22 de abril de 1961 (RஃEஃAஃ y Aஃ) tiene unos dos mil miembros repartidos en 88 Logias.
